What We Did

In Brighton, the Varndean School students concentrated on the sea front, looking at the architecture and the sea shore. In Port Talbot, the Glen Afan class went to Margam Park where we looked at the contrasts between natural beauty and industry, and the sculptures displayed there. Back in class we were able to construct our compositions using our thoughts and ideas of the day, as well as referencing our sketchbooks and photographs. We all used a variety of materials, approaches and viewpoints.

We electronically transferred the images to Powerpoint attached our comments about where we had been and what we had represented. These were then sent to the respective schools where we looked at and discussed what we saw. This evoked passionate debate and appreciation, as well as some constructive criticism!

Final Thoughts

Glen Afan Comprehensive:
'The project was brilliant. We got to go out of the classroom, and spent a day in Margam Park.'
'It was difficult making my painting but I am glad I did it, especially after seeing the brilliant work from the Brighton School.'
'I realised how beautiful our town could be if you look in the right places'
'I discovered that as an artist you can leave some things out of your painting which changes the way people looking at it might think.'
'I liked the painting with the seagulls in it. We have seagulls nesting in our school roof.'
'I know now how to insert a picture from a file into a PowerPoint page, and make it smaller or bigger.'

Varndean School:
'I don't think I will ever get bored of Brighton, I love it!!!'
'I put the sea sick doughnut in because it is an historical monument.'
'In my picture I have put an inscription of the entrance to the Volks Railway from 1883.'
'The place I was born, and where I want to be, this is what Brighton means to me.'
'To me Brighton is beautiful and always smiling.'
'The sea at Port Talbot looks a lot better than the sea at Brighton.'
'Port Talbot has lots more industry than Brighton, but I've heard that you have a sandy beach?'
'Port Talbot is very industrial and does not look very busy or lively, Brighton is extremely crowded and there is always something going on.'
'Josey's painting shows Port Talbot is about industry, my painting shows Brighton is about fun!'

Teachers: We thought the project certainly got the pupils interested, and as you can see by the comments it got them thinking about where they live, and what it must be like living elsewhere. We were delighted with the outcome, and pleased that the pupils had an opportunity to compare and contrast where they live. It made some of them appreciate what previously they had taken for granted. It also gave them a greater insight and understanding of the art and artists in the Tate exhibition, which the pupils are all now clamouring to go to!

All the pupils were able to use technology to put together the PowerPoint demonstration, and all the skills related to that. Certainly, now that we have made contact, we would like to continue the association and develop links between our schools. Who knows, we might even arrange a joint school trip and meet in the Tate Gallery!!!!
