What We Did

After discussion with our partner school in Bristol, we selected the 'Our Natural Area' activity, as this fitted in with our class focus. Each class had a discussion as to what they felt represented the area they lived in. Our partner school chose the Oak tree as it is their emblem and also selected the pheasant.

Our class had short listed three themes: the salmon, the buzzard and the otter. We finally decided on the otter, as our area is known as 'Tarka Country' and our school overlooks the Taw and Torridge Estuary where the story of 'Tarka the Otter' by Henry Williamson was set.

Our I.C.T. topic for the term was multi-media and so the children learned how to scan their paintings. They then presented their poems and art work using a PowerPoint presentation.

Pupils watched their finished presentation prior to being sent to our partner school and Tate. The children were excited to see their work presented on the 'big screen' and were very proud of their achievement. After watching the presentation each child wrote an evaluation.

Final Thoughts

Students:

  • I like the I.C.T. project because it is eye catching and colourful. Everyone helped to do this project. I liked this subject and I am sure the Bristol School will too.
  • I think PowerPoint is great for your work. I liked using it because you can choose how your pictures and writing merge into your work.
  • I found PowerPoint really fun. I learned a few new things about I.C.T. on PowerPoint.
  • I liked the beginning of the presentation where the slide of Instow came on like the start of a film.
  • I think the school in Bristol will be drawn to the presentation because it is different in the way in which the text and pictures move.
  • The ripple effect really made the poems feel like it was linked with the river.
  • I thought that the whole presentation was good and I think the pupils from Bristol will too.
  • I really liked, in some of the poems, how the movement of the text fitted in with the descriptions in the poems.
  • I liked the way that the pictures merged in with the text.
  • I think the Bristol pupils will be drawn to all the poems.

Teacher: Both the children and staff are very proud of what we have achieved in such a short space of time. We have e-mailed our PowerPoint to our partner school and are hoping to carry on with the project in the next couple of weeks.
