What We Did
The children all made pencil sketches of the views from the school grounds. They focused on creating texture and tone using the pencils. These sketches were then turned into postcards and the children wrote some information about themselves and the school\on the back. We then photographed the work and posted these cards to our partner school. The children then used the Internet to find out about some legends for the local area. They chose two legends, The Hairy Hand and The Legend of Lady Howard.
We researched the legends and the children worked individually to plan images that could represent the legend in a large scale piece of work. The children then went into groups of three and planned their large scale piece of work. They tried to incorporate ideas from all the group members. The children transferred their plans onto A1 paper and then added colour by using oil pastels, paint, charcoal, or a combination of all materials. The children photographed their work and then it was put on display in the school hall. |

Final Thoughts
Students:
We have learned a lot about the area our partner school is in. We found out so much about it that we were able to put the information into the class assembly we did about the Our Picture of Britain Project. We also learned about how to use different materials, particularly oil pastels, and different grade pencils. We all enjoyed learning how to create tone using the pencils and how to manipulate the oil pastels and charcoal, to create some good effects in our final large scale pieces. We really enjoyed sending and receiving e-mails to our partner schools and some of us have agreed we will continue to keep in touch with our partners. We enjoyed using the ICT throughout the project and we have all used a digital camera, downloaded our photographs, used the Internet to carry out research, and made a Power Point presentation about the overall project.
Teacher:
It was very good to have a partner in another part of the country. It gave the children a purpose for their e-mails and their Artwork. The only drawback was the short time we had to carry out the project. This meant that due to timetabling restraints it was not possible to make regular contact with the partner school, and this was something the children enjoyed the most. The project fulfilled many curriculum requirements. Not only did we cover Art, but also ICT, Geography, Literacy and Citizenship. Overall I feel that we could have continued this project over a much longer period of time as there was so much to become involved in.
