What We Did

Cobb's Engine House is a listed building about 1 mile away from the school which was built during the Industrial Revolution. It was used to house a steam pump which pumped ground water out from coal mines. The whole area has changed dramatically since the 1800's and the network of canals which surround it makes this part of Dudley a tourist destination for boating holidays. The class were involved in some aspects of its history and created a 'Picture of Britain' folder. We visited the area for an afternoon of sketching; the next two weeks were spent completing the following activities:

  • painting pictures based upon the sketches in both poster paint and watercolours
  • creating silhouette type studies of the house and its tower using black sugar paper and tracing paper
  • building and glazing miniature clay models of the house and the tower.

Final Thoughts

The actual visit to our local monument and associated art works produced was a resounding success. All children got much out of the project and it was made extra special by the fact that they were in such a fortunate position to have been "chosen" to participate. It was made cross-curricular by involving history, geography (map work), PHSE and ICT.

The liaison with the partner school in Devon began well and children from each class were paired up to email each other. Some exchanged several emails in "pen-pal" fashion and there was great excitement whenever an opportunity arose to check their in-boxes.
