What We Did

We brainstormed as many words as we could think of to describe our local area. Then we looked at the landscape view from our immediate locality of the playground. Using viewfinders to focus on a small area, we drew pencil sketches of what we saw. The children then chose whether to extend their work on their initial sketches by introducing watercolours to the same picture or worked with pastels to produce a landscape picture of the local river. The teacher helped them with this by displaying digital photographs on the interactive white board. As a staff, we decided to encourage the children to recreate the landscape background with their pastels and not include boats or houses in their work.

Final Thoughts

Students: We learnt how to write, send and receive e-mails. We wrote about ourselves, our school and village and sent our descriptions to our paired school. It was interesting to find out from them what they liked doing and where they lived. During ICT we sent our e-mails and learnt more about using the keyboard.

We have done a lot of work recently with pastels and watercolours, so we were able to use that work when focussing on our landscape. We learnt to draw what we see and not what we think we see. It was interesting to use the digital photos of the river to make pastel drawings.

Teacher: The project helped us to fulfill our objectives in ICT, as this term we have been focussing on sending and receiving e-mails. This provided the children with a very real experience.

We have also been looking, as a staff, at teaching and learning, so we used one of our Art lessons as a focus for a team teaching session. This enabled us to focus on what the children already knew and could do and expanded by concentrating on using high order questions to encourage children to elaborate and develop their creativity.

It has been great being able to use the wonderful resource that we have available to us in our local area and the children have produced some wonderful pieces of work.
