What We Did

The Year 5 children brought in 'stuff', as they called it, which they thought represented their area of Britain (after mind mapping). We then decided on themes that could be covered and would be appropriate for group work. A trip to take digital photographs to add to the collages completed the acquisition of materials. The children then decided how to arrange the items for each collage.

The Year 3 children looked at their local area and thought about what it means to them. We went on local walk and took photographs and sketches of important and recognisable images, buildings and places. We wrote poetry and painted pictures of our ideas. Then we put all of the work together to make 6 large scale mosaics. Each one represents a different aspect of living in London. Each one shows different buildings and landscapes.

Final Thoughts

Teacher Year 5: I (and the children) were very pleased with the finished product. It was a very organic (if that's the right word) process which resulted in stunning collages! I didn't really know what was going to happen or what the finished product would be. It was a learning curve for me, as I'm a bit of a slave to very structured planning!

Teacher Year 3: The children had a wonderful time producing these mosaics.
