Graffiti Doodles

October 2004, Tate Britain
Songs, caricatures, nightmares, newspaper stories and sights in the street – these are just some of the things that artist Paula Rego once said inspired her to start painting. Using these things, create your own doodle works using Rego’s early work as inspiration.

Here’s one of Rego’s early works, The Firemen of Alijo. What can you see in the painting? What nightmares can you see here? Can you cut out newspaper stories and build them into your collage?

  • Make a collage about what is happening in the world today. Get today's newspaper and cut out stories that catch your eye. Build headlines/photographs into your collage.
  • What sorts of animals could you include in your painting or collage?
  • Cut pictures of people in half and make them half-animal, half-human. You could also include a cartoon character or give someone a giant nose or three eyes.
  • Give your creatures wings and have them fly through the air.
  • Think of words you could include in your work - for example, what pop song could you include in your painting, and how?
  • Use different colours to connect together everything that you have put into your collage so far.
  • See how you can make your designs connect up and fly across the paper in a rush of movement and colour.
