Make a Stripy Floor

November 2005, Tate Britain
Turner Prize nominee, Jim Lambie, has created a room where the floor is covered entirely with black and white stripes. Make your own stripy floor using electrical tape. You will need to think about how you will make different patterns using different coloured stripes. Cut your tape into strips and stick it onto a panel of card or large sheet of paper. Create patterns that cross, fold, clash and zigzag. Expand your floor as you go, adding more pieces of paper.

Top tips!

  • You can buy electrical tape cheaply and easily at any hardware store.
  • Use a range of colours.
  • Think about how the patterns will all add up to create a final design.
  • Lay your sheets on a hard floor and stick them down.
  • See how much floor you can fill.
