Postcards and Interventions
I felt that this half way point was a good time to start clarifying thought as to possible outcomes in terms of work to be made. These outcomes came as a result of ideas generated so far, and were presented as flexible structures within which pupils could do what they pleased. I tried to ensure that there would be work produced at various levels - from collaborative through to individual, autonomous work. See Outcomes 1-6 sheet. This session can be adapted for use at your local museum or gallery Outline sessions activities:
Prepare students for each activity (which will be based in the gallery) by re-capping and going over significant issues. Discuss: Postcards. Look at a postcard set from an exhibition. What do they usually depict? What have we been looking at? What would it be like to re-direct the viewers' attention to the overlooked? If we are to make postcards, is it important that they look like those you would usually get at Tate (or your local museum/gallery)? (Reflect on artists we have looked at, eg Andrea Fraser who 'simulates' something that already exists, but twists it). Discuss: Interventions in the Gallery. Re-visit the discussion about the impact of re-locating objects from one place to another. Re-visit any ideas the pupils had at school, and highlight that we are now looking at Tate. Encourage the pupils to include all ideas/proposals- both 'real' interventions to be made at Tate, and impossible ones which will make great images. Inform them that they can work alone, in pairs or groups. Location: at Tate Modern (or your local museum/gallery)
