Introducing TiP
TiP1 is an innovative professional development programme which allows you to build a closer relationship with Tate as well as teachers from other schools. Using our Collection of British art from 1500 to today and international modern and contemporary art, TiP provides a unique opportunity to fully explore working with art as a teaching and learning resource.
You can choose to follow the course at either Tate Britain or Tate Modern - there are 30 places at Tate Britain and 20 at Tate Modern each year. The programme takes place over three terms and includes four sessions at your chosen gallery. Through a combination of InSET and artist-led workshops, you’ll be encouraged to develop an innovative arts project which includes a visit to the gallery for you and your students.
TiP is facilitated by experienced artist educators who regularly plan and run our Schools and Teachers programmes.
The course is introduced and overseen by Tate’s Schools and Teachers Curators and Assistant Curators.
Objectives
• Use Tate’s collection to develop your subject knowledge of historic, modern and contemporary art
• Explore a range of ways to use the gallery as a teaching and learning resource
• Identify methods to engage children with the Collection and extend their experience in the classroom through practical and theoretical work
• Bring artist educators and teachers together to provide a bridge between the classroom and the gallery and to facilitate practice-sharing
• Provide opportunities for teachers to reflect on their own artistic practice.

TiP Programme Details
Step 1: InSET 1 - Introduction to TiP and Tate’s Methodology
On this one-day InSET you:
• Visit Collection displays and exhibitions (including Francis Bacon at Tate Britain and Rothko at Tate Modern) and discuss the value of visiting a gallery
• Discover Tate's 'Ways-In' methodology for working with art
• Identify practical ways of making a gallery visit successful through preparatory work
• Explore a variety of resources at Tate Britain or Tate Modern that extend and support your visit beyond the gallery
• Develop a project in groups in response to what you have learnt.
Step 2: TiP Web-based Induction Evening
During this introductory evening session you:
• Work with Tate's E-learning Curator to explore and learn how to use TiP Web-based, our innovative online communication forum
• Discuss possible individual, pair or group contributions over the following two terms
• Upload information from InSET 1, including personal expectations and project outlines.
Step 3: Tate-led Schools Workshop
The next stage of the programme is to observe and participate in an artist-educator led schools workshop held at Tate Britain or Tate Modern. Workshops offer an in-depth look at the art on display and are focused on various themes. Using a variety of approaches, including looking, thinking, discussion, resource-based activities and small-group tasks, students develop and test their own interpretations of the art in the gallery.
To choose your workshop topic and date, please see the Tate Schools brochure or visit the website.
You must book your workshop by 16 October for Tate Britain or 11 November for Tate Modern at the latest. If you need advice on which theme to choose, please call 020 7887 8767 for Tate Britain or 020 7401 5234 for Tate Modern. To book, call 020 7887 8888.
Once you’ve made your booking, you will receive a confirmation letter and information on the rules and regulations relating to your gallery visit. Please pay particular attention to these guidelines and the Health and Safety Statement.
Step 4: InSET 2 - Workshop Evaluation and Project Development
On the second whole-day InSET you feed back your experiences and thoughts about the gallery workshop. The approaches used are discussed, summarised and evaluated within the group alongside ideas for future follow-up projects with Tate Britain or Tate Modern. You’ll also spend time in the gallery devising activities and building the skills you need to facilitate gallery sessions with groups.
Step 5: Follow-up Project in School (including a Self-Directed Gallery Visit)
You will now develop a classroom project that uses Tate’s collection as a teaching and learning resource. This project should extend and develop your classroom practice and incorporates a self-directed group visit led by you. You will document and record this process to share with other TiP teachers.
Step 6: Practice-Sharing Forum
TiP1 ends with a practice-sharing event where teachers present and discuss their projects with peers from the programme, as well as reflecting on their professional development throughout the year. You will have the chance to assess the value of practice-sharing both in groups and online, and to express your ideas on further possible follow-up projects.

However, TiP is designed to encourage teachers from different schools to work collaboratively and applications from individuals will be accepted.
