Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) 1959
Winner of the Foreign Language Oscar, as well as the Palm d'Or, Orfeu Negro is a remarkable, and exuberant film that unfolds onto the screen, bringing to life colour, and movement. A re-telling of a classic Greek legend, Orpheus (Breno Mello) is a Brazilian tram driver, seducing the beautiful Eurydice (Marpesa Dawn) through his musical charms. Set in Rio de Janeiro, and directed by the Frenchman, Marcel Camus, Orfeu Negro presents an outsider's view of a world filled with social, and cultural injustices.
