Isaac Julien's video installation Paradise Omeros 2002 presents a view of history as dramatised personal memory. Through this personalised, yet fictional, account Julien addresses the history of migration, moving between a colour-saturated, phantasmagorical St Lucia and a brutalist, grainy Britain, drained of colour. Fantasy mingles with painful, sometimes violent recollection. Julien has written 'art must, I believe, begin with – or in my case, make a return to – the personal as a symbolic 'archive'.' Julien's work fuses divergent approaches to history, memory and imagination as well as to filmic construction.
