Bruce Nauman: Make Me Think Me

Edited by Laurence Sillars

Bruce Nauman's pioneering investigations into the role of the artist and his explorations of human behaviour have left their mark on countless artistic careers since the 1960s.

Bruce Nauman: Make Me Think Me features a collection of critical appraisals by leading writers from both sides of the Atlantic. It surveys Nauman's career, focusing particularly on his preoccupation with the human condition. Over sixty works from 1966 - 2005 are illustrated and discussed, including sculpture, neons, video, performance, installation and drawing. Nauman's fascination with and manipulation of language, including puns, palindromes and repetition, are examined alongside his use of instructional texts that set out to control the behaviour of the audience. His use of the body, be it his own, the viewer's or that of the animal and human head casts he has made since the late 1980s, provides another central theme. The role of the audience in inhabiting and moving through Nauman's works is also examined. This timely survey will bring new insights on the career of one of the most influential artists of the last half century.
