This political cartoon published in the New York Sun in 1947 illustrates the precarious balance between peace and world destruction, as the proliferation of atomic weapons increased, following the USA's bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.

Reinhardt's cartoon satirizes the tendency to question Art rather than simply take pleasure in it. The image also illustrates Reinhardt's desire for a radical abstraction that would challenge (in this case literally!) the cultural complacency of post-war America.
