The atomic bombing of Hiroshima, 6 August, 1945. The photograph was taken by Sergeant George R. Caron, the tail gunner of the Enola Gay aeroplane, on a hand held camera. The image of the mushroom cloud became an icon for the second-half of the 20th century.
