Salon Series: The Golden Touch
Peter Franklin and Gavin Plumley
In the same way that the Wiener Werkstätte embraced the idea of Richard Wagner's 'Gesamtkunstwerk' (total work of art), the composer Gustav Mahler, a close friend of Klimt's, was writing symphonies that intended to have an all encompassing, universal appeal.
In this salon, musicologists Peter Franklin and Gavin Plumley explore the cross-fertilisation of art, literature and music in turn of the century Vienna. The salon will be punctuated by unique musical illustrations of the work of Mahler, Schoenberg, Schreker and Zemlinsky among others. Stay to hear some of these pieces performed live by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as part of Late at Tate Liverpool.
