Salon Series: Cradle to the Grave
Pamela Robertson, Peter Vergo and Alan Crawford

Thursday 28 August 2008, 18.00–19.30

Strong parallels can be drawn between the Wiener Werkstätte movement in Austria and that of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and America in their approach to the integration of art and design. However, while the Arts and Crafts Movement was interested in integrating the craft tradition with mass production techniques for a mass market, the Wiener Werkstätte concentrated on good design for a more select market.

This salon compares and contrasts the two approaches in a debate between Professor Peter Vergo, University of Essex – an expert in Viennese art of the period, Professor Pamela Robertson, Senior Curator of the Whistler and Mackintosh collections at the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow and Alan Crawford, author of the Thames & Hudson illustrated study of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
