Thomas Gainsborough , Giovanna Baccelli

Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788)
Giovanna Baccelli
exhibited 1782

Purchased by the Tate Gallery with assistance from the Friends 1975

Giovanna Baccelli, a leading ballerina of her day, presented Gainsborough with a rare opportunity to portray an unusual sitter in an unusual pose - and he captures the very essence of the dancer. With this masterpiece from the artist's maturity the collection acquired a full-length female portrait of outstanding importance.
