Ben Nicholson, 1932 (Auberge de la Sole Dieppoise)

Ben Nicholson
1932 (Auberge de la Sole Dieppoise)
1932

Presented by Mr and Mrs Michael Sacher through the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1967

One of a group of paintings inspired by looking in shop and restaurant windows in Dieppe where, in the summer of 1932, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth had gone to visit Braque. Reflections and counter reflections in the glass windows create an intriguing series of planes. The likeness is of Barbara Hepworth herself — the human figure is rare in Nicholson's work.
