James Seymour (?1702–1752), A Kill at Ashdown Park 1743

James Seymour (?1702–1752)
A Kill at Ashdown Park
1743

Purchased with assistance from the Friends of the Tate Gallery and subscribers 1969

Seymour was among the first of many distinguished English animal painters, though to sophisticated twenty first century eyes his paintings may appear naïve, the figures somewhat stylised. At the time fox hunting had not yet become an organised sport. Individual members of the Friends also contributed towards the purchase of this painting.
