Purchased with assistance from the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1965

The generosity of Giacometti, following his 1965 Tate retrospective helped make possible the acquisition of a large and important group of works. Several reflect the artist’s obsession with the human form in space.  His figures are typically isolated, attenuated and often reduced in scale. The more Giacometti pared down a figure the more powerful he felt it became.
