This painting, from the beginning of Mondrian’s mature period, fulfilled Tate’s ambition to acquire works made at crucial junctures earlier in his career.  The bright colours and animated paint surface recall vividly the paintings of van Gogh and the Fauves; the dominant centrally placed church tower may refer to a higher spiritual reality.
