Cy Twombly, Quattro Stagioni (A Painting in Four Parts)

Cy Twombly (born 1928)
Quattro Stagioni (A Painting in Four Parts) 1993–4

© Cy Twombly. Purchased with assistance from the American Fund for the Tate Gallery and Tate Members 2002.

Resident in Rome since 1959, Twombly’s interests include the ancient art and mythology of the Mediterranean. In Quattro Stagioni (Four Seasons) his use of strong colours suggest the brilliant Mediterranean light while the theme has long been used in classical poetry and painting to evoke the natural rhythms of death and rebirth.
