David Hockney (born 1937)
Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy 1970–71

Tate © David Hockney. Presented by the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1971.

One of a series of large double portraits of friends of the artist shows fashion designer Ossie Clark and his wife fabric designer Celia Birtwell in their house in Bayswater. These portraits are in the great English tradition – Gainsborough’s early groups spring to mind – but Hockney’s work has always been closely linked with events and relationships of his own life.
