Work of the Week

Week27

George Stubbs (1724–1806), Haymakers 1785

George Stubbs (1724–1806)
Haymakers 1785

Purchased with assistance from the Friends of the Tate Gallery, The Art Fund, the Pilgrim Trust and subscribers 1977

As with ‘The Blue Rig’ recently, the funds needed to purchase this work were secured via a combination of institutional and individual donations.  Workers in the countryside are depicted in a direct, sympathetic yet unsentimental way, setting this and companion piece Reapers apart from the rustic ‘fancy’ pictures popular at the time.
