Purchased with a special Grant-in-Aid and the Florence Fox Bequest with assistance from the Friends of the Tate Gallery and the Contemporary Art Society 1965
The traditional reading of this work, purchased direct from the artist’s collection, was based on a remark Picasso himself made. It is said to recall a tragic, triangular love affair and the subsequent suicide of a friend: love, sex and death linked in an ecstatic dance.
