Gorky painted this picture at a crucial moment of his career when he had begun to develop a distinctive style of his own. The Tate’s picture derived from a holiday with his wife in Connecticut. His widow wrote: The Tate Waterfall was one of the happiest paintings he ever made and he loved it.
