Allan Ramsay, Thomas, 2nd Baron Mansel of Margam with his Blackwood Half-Brothers and Sister

Allan Ramsay (1713–1784)
Thomas, 2nd Baron Mansel of Margam with his Blackwood Half-Brothers and Sister 1742

Purchased with assistance from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, The Art Fund (Woodroffe Bequest), the Friends of the Tate Gallery, the Mail on Sunday through the Friends of Tate Gallery, Arthur Young, Mrs Sue Hammerson and others 1988

Scottish born Ramsay was one of the most accomplished British portrait painters of his day. This was probably commissioned to commemorate the children’s mother, who had died in October 1741. It is an exceptionally tender study of young people in an informal setting.
