Giorgio de Chirico, The Uncertainty of the Poet

Giorgio de Chirico (1888 – 1978)
The Uncertainty of the Poet
1913

Purchased with assistance from The Art Fund (Eugene Cremetti Fund), the Carroll Donner Bequest, the Friends of the Tate Gallery and members of the public 1985

De Chirico’s self-termed ‘metaphysical paintings’ combine scenes of contemporary life and visions of antiquity to produce, in his words a “troubling dream reality”. Formerly in the collection of Sir Roland Penrose, this was a worthy addition to Tate’s fine collection of Surrealist art.
