Purchased with assistance from The Art Fund (Eugene Cremetti Fund), the Carroll Donner Bequest, the Friends of the Tate Gallery and members of the public 1985
De Chirico’s self-termed ‘metaphysical paintings’ combine scenes of contemporary life and visions of antiquity to produce, in his words a “troubling dream reality”. Formerly in the collection of Sir Roland Penrose, this was a worthy addition to Tate’s fine collection of Surrealist art.
