David Bomberg, In the Hold

David Bomberg (1890–1957)
In the Hold
circa 1913-4

Presented by the Friends of the Tate Gallery 1967

An audacious, original painter Bomberg sought a visual language with which to express the modern urban environment. This painting depicts dockers, whose militancy was widely publicized at the time. But figures dissolve via a superimposed grid into a dazzling sequence of geometric shapes.
