Tate Modern's exhibition Sigmar Polke: History of Everything examines the renowned German artist's interest in surveillance, authority and the technological breakdown of printing mistakes. Polke has an uncanny ability to mine the unstable - and often impure - relationship between representation and abstraction, and his alchemy of photographic and painting processes raises profound questions about the mechanics and meaning of images.

Booker Prize winning writer AS Byatt will join German art historian Martin Hentschel in the exhibition to discuss Polke's maelstrom of visual references, and the resonant political and cultural satire that arises from it.
