For over a century, cinema, architecture and fashion have
informed and animated one another. Their mutual collisions have defined
the experience and appearance of modern life. To mark the release of Art
and Design: A Source Book, a new British Film Institute catalogue,
the bfi and Tate present this symposium to navigate the exciting
intersections between these critical cultural bedfellows.
Featuring Giuliana Bruno, Professor
of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University and author
of Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture and Film,
Mark Wigley, Professor of Architecture, Columbia University
and author of White Walls, Designer Dresses: The Fashioning
of Modern Architecture , and Ulrich Lehmann,
Head of Course, MA in History of Design at the Victoria & Albert
Museum and the Royal College of Art, London and other speakers to
be confirmed. The event will use talks, screenings, and discussions
to interrogate the mobilised surfaces, spaces and images that form
contemporary life.
