Art Into Life

Gallery Introductions for Community Groups
Mondays to Fridays
90 minute sessions
Mornings from 10.15

Visit Tate Modern, receive a warm welcome and take part in a free informal introduction to Britain's national museum of modern art. Led by friendly staff, these introductions are an opportunity to get to know the building, to discover the displays and to have your say about modern art. Particularly suitable for community groups/organisations new to gallery-going. Our regular group visitors include: Access groups in Further Education, elders organisations, mental health service user groups, community centres. Staff have extensive experience of working with adults with learning difficulties.

Each session is tailor-made to suit all interests and abilities and might involve looking, talking, simple practical activities and the use of handling objects.

To book call Tate Box Office on 020 7887 3959 at least 2 weeks in advance.
Please note: we believe in small group work. The minimum group size is 5, the maximum is 15.

Community Advocates Programme
This programme builds bridges between key individuals who represent a range of communities- including individuals who work at grass roots and at senior management levels- and at Tate. All the participants live and or work in our neighbourhood: Southwark, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets. The aim of the programme is to give a broader understanding of Tate Modern, in return participants give a presentation about their work and who they represent within their community. The programme is intended to be the beginning of an ongoing relationship between the advocates and Tate Modern. Regular celebration events take place throughout the year with all advocates.

Seniors Events
Tate Modern runs regular free events for seniors who live in Southwark or Lambeth. Senior events are very informal get-togethers led by artist educator Michaela Ross and other Tate staff. Refreshments are provided, as well as the opportunity to look at some artworks in the gallery and to meet new people. These events are aimed at individuals; hence you do not need to come as a group. Most importantly, you do not need to be an ‘art expert’ as these events are particularly suitable for those new to gallery-going or new to modern and contemporary art. Annual workshops are also organised as part of local and national festivals that celebrate age.

Small Steps in a Big Space
Small Steps in a Big Space is aimed at local parents some of whom are deemed 'hard to reach' with pre-school children who take part in a series of workshops and celebration events. An outreach worker plays a significant part in developing relationships with the parents. In 2006 she was awarded an 'Active in the Community Award' as part of Southwark International Women's Week.
