Value of Art
Community Programme Tate Modern; training and professional development.
The Community Programme at Tate Modern organises a range of bespoke training
programmes and courses for adults across a wide range of sectors.
The training focuses on how to use TM as a learning resource and is tailored
to the specific learning objectives and training needs of the group.
Since 2001 the training has covered 3 main areas
Using TM as a learning resource for adults / staff whose
background and training are not arts based
Examples of this work include a local Family Learning Centre in Southwark where
ESOL tutors, crèche workers and IT staff were introduced to the gallery
and the range of educational resources on offer at TM.
We offer regular professional development programmes for play staff from several
London Boroughs in the use of creative play both inside and outside the gallery.
We are delighted to work with City University and the theatre company Performing
Medicine as part of specific academic courses and training programmes.
Using TM to support an arts development programme
We are proud to work in partnership with the Kings Fund in supporting their
programme ‘Enhancing the Healing Environment’, a nationwide strategic
programme working with hospitals, mental health units and hospices. We have
worked together with the Kings Fund, health staff and service users since
2001 in this innovative and ambitious programme.
As part of a specific aspect of training delivery
We work very successfully with the award winning NVQ provider QKL in supporting
their provision and assessment of NVQ3 in care. Since 2002 care staff from
a wide range of health, housing and supported living contexts have worked
at Tate Modern learning to use gallery resources, developing their skills
by bringing service users to the gallery and sharing activities.
Methodology and costs of training
Training and professional development at TM is delivered by expert Artist Educators
with a wide range of professional arts and education experience. We use small
group work (maximum group size 15) and a range of activities and resources
in gallery based workshops. Opportunities are made during the training day
for participants to develop personal work plans and activities for use in
the workplace. As this is a tailor made training programme, costs vary but
on average a day of gallery based training for 15 people costs £400
plus VAT.
Accreditation
Tate Modern has been working with QKL since 2002 to link Access Tate courses
1 and 2 with NVQ Level 3 in Care. Organising therapeutic group activities,
expanding communication skills and independent living skills are all aspects
of NVQ Level 3 that are covered in Access Tate training. NVQ Assessors may
attend any of the days listed above to assist NVQ students or request their
own training.
