Frida Kahlo filled her diary with painted and written expressions of her private feelings, never intended for publication. It has since become a bestseller. This two-part workshop explores the concept of the diary, written and visual, public and private.

During the first week, tutors present diaries which chronicle events and places, as well as those which record intimate thoughts and secrets. They open up questions about the relationship between personal and public history, and between distribution, recognition and voyeurism. Artists whose work is discussed include Bill Brandt, Charlotte Salomon, Frida Kahlo, Nan Goldin, Sophie Calle, Jo Spence, Chantal Ackerman, Corinne Day and Tracey Emin.

Between sessions participants are invited to work on a small project in response to the ideas raised and this provides a basis for further discussion when the group reconvenes.
