Performance, Gender and Identity

Saturday 25 June 2005, 10.30–16.00

This study day explores the relationship between gender, performance and self-portraiture. Speakers consider theories of performance and identity in relation to a range of recent practices in which the artist’s body is the primary subject of representation. The day includes discussion of work by artists including Frida Kahlo, Ana Mendieta and Carolee Schneemann, and a presentation by contemporary artist Melanie Manchot. Speakers include Gill Perry and Dot Rowe from The Open University, Sophie Howarth from Tate Modern, Kathy Battista from the London Consortium and Gavin Butt from Goldsmiths College.
