Photography and Fiction
Led by Susan Bright, photography curator and critic
Mondays 31 October 2005 – 5 December 2005, 18.30–20.00
Fiction and photography are more intertwined than we often think they are. This course examines the different relationships that photography has with fiction. Participants explore the way the medium is represented in literature and film, as well as how artists such as Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson, Rodney Graham and Anna Gaskell use photography to stage elaborate fictions. Famous fakes and forgeries will be discussed in terms of their impact on the assumed veracity of photography. The course includes one or more sessions in the Jeff Wall: Photography 1978–2004 exhibition at Tate Modern. It will also include a session led by the artist Hannah Starkey.
