Utopias and Avant-Gardes

Saturday 25 March 2006, 10.30–16.30

This study day explores Utopian beliefs in the power of culture to transform both the individual and society at large. The speakers consider how changing Utopian ideologies have motivated artists, architects, designers and filmmakers in Europe and America over the last hundred years. The topics covered include the pioneering first wave of abstract art in the early twentieth century, visions of Utopia in avant-garde film, and postmodern explorations of the concept of Utopia by contemporary artists.

The speakers include Paul Wood and Tim Benton from The Open University, Clare Bishop from the Royal College of Art, artist Ian White and Tate Modern curator Achim Borchardt-Hume, who gives a presentation about the Albers and Moholy-Nagy: From the Bauhaus to the New World exhibition.
