Todd Haynes has emerged as one of the most important contemporary American filmmakers. In films such as Far From Heaven (2002), SAFE (1995) and Poison (1991), his characters’ visual and emotional isolation, the lush, static poignancy of his settings, and his ability to mine the uncanny, paranormal nature of American life all resonate strongly with the work of Edward Hopper.

In conjunction with this summer’s Hopper exhibition at Tate Modern, Haynes has selected a programme of historic and contemporary films to explore the significance of cinema for Hopper and the importance of Hopper to the development of film.

To accompany this personal response to Hopper’s work, Tate Modern is screening three of Haynes’ critically celebrated films. This programme will engage Haynes’ and Hopper’s connections to cinema and visual culture in new and unexpected ways.
