The rigorous, stimulating films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet have provoked strong reactions since their debut in 1965. Valuing the soundtrack as much as the visual image, they favour direct sound. Most of their films are based on pre-existing works of art. This screening includes two recent films: a short political pamphlet, about the death of two boys pursued by French police and an adaptation of the poet Joachim Gasquet’s account of discussions about painting with Paul Cézanne.
