Shot in four days and edited over four years, Câncer dispenses with logical narrative to focus on psychological, sexual and racial violence through the improvised performances of three characters. Featuring Hélio Oiticica, Rocha’s ‘technical experiment’ reflects the director’s desire to craft a distinctly Brazilian cinematic vernacular. It powerfully fulfills his credo: ‘an idea in one's head and a camera in one's hand'.
