David O Selznick, the Hollywood super-producer responsible for Hitchcock's Spellbound, produced this supernatural romantic fantasy beloved by Luis Buñuel, Paul Eluard and the Parisian surrealists with whom Dalí associated. The poetic ghost story stars Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lillian Gish and Ethyl Barrymore in a melancholy tale of a painter lured into the spirit world. The film won an Academy Award for its dreamy special effects.
