In 1937 Dalí wrote to his friend, the surrealist poet André Breton, ‘I have come to Hollywood and am in touch with the three great American surrealists – the Marx Brothers, Cecil B DeMille and Walt Disney.’ The artist befriended Harpo Marx and wrote a film script for the brothers entitled Giraffes on Horseback Salads. A Night at the Opera, the first Marx Brothers film made at MGM, is considered one of their best. It features Groucho, Harpo and Chico in a ploy to help a lovesick opera singer win the heart of the lady of his dreams.
