Featuring work by Joseph Cornell, Jonas Mekas and Jack Bond, this screening presents films involving Dalí’s flamboyant presence in New York. It begins with an entertaining 1966 documentary directed by British filmmaker Jack Bond for the BBC. Legendary American surrealist Joseph Cornell’s landmark film Rose Hobart follows. Dalí attended the premiere of the film in 1936 at the Julian Levy Gallery, and halfway through the film overturned the projector and shouted, ‘Bastard!’. He claimed that Cornell stole the film from his subconscious. Two short films by influential experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas conclude the programme. Salvador Dalí, Happenings stars Veruschka and Taylor Mead, Moires with Prof. Oster and Salvador Dalí was filmed during biophysicist Gerald Oster’s demonstration of the hallucinatory effects of moiré patterns.
See Jonas Mekas' musings on Salvador Dalí in the current issue of TATE ETC.
Mekas' film Diaries, Notes and Sketches aka Walden is currently included in Tate Modern's Collection Display States of Flux.
