Murat and Ismail grew out of Italian artist Mario Rizzi's three-month residency in Istanbul. Focusing on a family-run shoemaker's shop in the neighbourhood of Beyoglu, the father and son story is set against the economic transformations ripping through the city. A profound intimacy destabilises the objective, documentary nature of the film. Both sympathetic and direct, Rizzi's camera records the hopes and fears of people subject to forces beyond their control.
