bfi & Tate: An American in Paris
Vincente Minnelli, USA 1951, 113’, cert U
Perhaps the greatest dance musical, An American in Paris stars Gene Kelly as a young artist who finds love on the Left Bank. As well as the George Gershwin songs and score, including the blissful S’Wonderful, the film is memorable for its climactic ballet sequence inspired by the work of Henri Rousseau, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Raoul Dufy, Maurice Utrillo, Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Manet and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. An American in Paris won six Academy Awards including Best Film.
