Jazz of Lights
Ian Hugo, US 1954, 16’
The lights of Times Square at night. Abstracted from their gaudy commercialism, the lights create intricate patterns of form
and colour. The blind poet Moondog and Hugo’s wife Anaïs Nin move like ghosts through this haunted cityscape.
The Window Cleaner
Jules Bucher, US 1945, 6’
A day in the life of the man who cleans the windows of New York’s Empire State Building. Stunning cityscapes and cheery philosophising
give voice and character to one of the city’s helping hands.
Manhatta
Paul Strand/Charles Sheeler, US 1921, 7’
An impressionistic representation of Walt Whitman’s lyric hymn to the city marked the beginning of a brilliant career in cinematography
for Strand.
Architectural Millinery
Sidney Peterson, US 1954, 7’
Best known for his Dadaist films of the late 40s, Peterson made a series of documentaries for the Museum of Modern Art in
New York. This witty tale compares the tops of New York skyscrapers with styles of hats.
The City
Willard Van Dyke/Ralph Steiner, US 1939, 44’
Based on the Lewis Mumford book The Culture of the Cities. In a series of sharp and often humorous juxtapositions, the quiet
pastoral beauty of the pre-industrial age is compared with the contemporary chaos of metropolitan life.
The New York Through Candid Eyes film series is programmed in relation to Edward Hopper.
