Tate Modern presents the first UK survey of work by video pioneer Charles Atlas, one of the premier interpreters of dance, theatre and performance on video. He transforms this genre into a provocative and ironic collusion of narrative and fictional modes with performance documentary. In vibrant pastiches of narrative and performance, he has collaborated with international performers and choreographers, including Merce Cunningham, Michael Clark, Leigh Bowery, John Kelly, Karole Armitage and Bill Irwin. For Atlas, the theatricality of dance and performance is a point of inquiry into artifice, fiction and reality. This series features legendary videos, including Hail the New Puritan, Because We Must, and Put Blood in the Music.
This survey of his film and video work coincides with Turning, Atlas’s new collaboration with Antony and the Johnsons, which takes place at the Barbican 4–5 November 2006.
Charles Atlas is the recipient of the John Cage Award 2006.
