Frida, Naturaleza Viva
Paul Leduc, Mexico 1984, 108’, subs
This fictionalised documentary investigates the agonies and ecstasies that punctuated, and literally punctured, Frida Kahlo’s
life, in a series of dramatised flashbacks as she lies on her deathbed. Leduc’s approach is painstakingly detailed, choosing
an actress with an uncanny resemblance to the artist, and using Kahlo’s own clothes, bed and even paintings as props. Through
the artist’s eyes we experience the tortures and mutilations her body suffered, ultimately tempered and overcome by her passions
for Diego Rivera and Leon Trotsky, for Mexico itself and the communist cause, and most of all for her work.
