Loneliness and the Modern Pentathlon
Daria Martin, UK 2005, 20'
Daria Martin’s short 16mm films create and explore fragile worlds of utopian aspiration, Gesamtkunstwerk on the verge of collapse. This is the London premiere of Loneliness and the Modern Pentathlon, which examines twentieth-century avant-garde ideals via an arcane Olympic sport, the modern pentathlon, an anachronistic, but still surviving event comprised of running, swimming, shooting, horseback riding and fencing. Tensions between aspiration and exhaustion, between forward-looking modernity and romanticism and between artifice and expression are heightened and unravelled in this many-layered film, which stars British New Wave cinema icon Rita Tushingham and features a dreamlike soundtrack by acclaimed experimental New York-based harpist Zeena Parkins.
On Sunday 2 April, Martin introduces the screening, and following the film, she and Parkins present a performance in the Turbine Hall drawn from the film's themes and components. There will be a screening of the film approximately every 30 minutes from 7–9pm. Café 2 will also be open from 6–10pm selling drinks and light snacks.
On Wednesday 5 April, Daria Martin takes part in a discussion at Tate Britain, which explores the relationship between art and music.
